Antique Victorian Edwardian Long Cattle Horn Shoe Horn Ornate Metal Handle c1900
Antique Victorian Edwardian Long Cattle Horn Shoe Horn Ornate Metal Handle c1900
Large antique long-handled shoe horn, believed to date from the late Victorian or Edwardian period, circa 1890–1920.
Made from genuine natural cattle horn with attractive dark brown, amber, cream and translucent colouring.
The upper end has an ornate cast metal mount with scroll and foliate decoration. Above this is a threaded silver-coloured metal terminal with hanging ring. The threaded construction is consistent with period manufacture, although I cannot confirm whether the upper silver-coloured section is original to the shoe horn or a later replacement.
A substantial and decorative example, intended to allow shoes to be put on while standing.
The horn has age-related scratches, surface marks and wear. The metal mount has tarnishing, rubbing and loss to the finish, all consistent with age and use. Please study the photographs carefully for condition.
No clearly identifiable hallmark has been found, so the silver-coloured fittings are being described as white metal / silver-coloured metal rather than solid silver.
Approximate date: late 19th / early 20th century
Material: natural cattle horn with mixed metal fittings
Style: Victorian / Edwardian
Type: long-handled standing shoe horn
