Vintage 1950s Aden Yemen Souvenir Musical Jewellery Box Mother of Pearl Inlay
Vintage Souvenir of Aden jewellery / vanity box, believed to have been made in Aden during the mid-20th century, probably around the 1950s–1960s.
A particularly decorative example with a black lacquered exterior, hand-painted map showing Aden, the Red Sea, Arabia and East Africa, together with a traditionally dressed figure. Plays Music when opened. The lid is bordered with attractive iridescent mother-of-pearl / shell mosaic inlay.
The interior is unusually elaborate and opens to reveal a red-lined fitted arrangement comprising a large mirror, two decorated removable/lidded compartments with orange tassel pulls, further storage compartments and hinged side sections.
The box also retains its original key.
A fascinating piece of Aden/Yemen social and colonial-era souvenir history, likely originally purchased by a British serviceman, seaman, traveller or expatriate passing through Aden when it was an important international port.
Condition: Good vintage condition overall with age-related wear. The shell decoration remains very attractive. Interior lining shows some age/use but is generally well preserved. Please study all photographs carefully.
