Happy Jack's Go Buggy: A Fighter Pilot's Story, is Ilfrey's autobiography. It chronicles his experiences, from being among the first American pilots to fly to England to his time in North Africa and his return to Europe with the 20th Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force. The book is particularly known for its firsthand accounts of air combat and a remarkable story of his evasion of capture after being shot down over France following D-Day. He famously returned to his base and resumed flying missions, which was highly unusual for downed airmen.
